TaylorMade Spider Tour X Putter Review

Reviewing the Putter Played by Rory & Scottie

With Scottie Scheffler switching to the Spider Tour X and subsequently earning two tour wins, we thought it was worth doing a more in-depth review. The newest edition of the Spider Tour X, which also resides in Rory’s bag, aims to elevate putting performance with a blend of established technologies and innovative design. The Spider Tour X is a remodel of the famous Spider Tour putter, played by Jason Day. I have the first edition of both of these models, so giving the new ones a go was a real treat.

What’s Different With the New Spider Tour X Putter?

TaylorMade Spider Tour X Putter on white seamless background. The first thing that came to mind is nothing has changed. The look and feel were exactly the same, except for the colour, I have the gold version, where this is gunmetal grey.

I was intrigued to see if the forgiveness had increased, but this was not the case. Other than the color, it performs the same as the first Spider X model. Having said that, the putter is incredible. From the looks and the feel to the forgiveness, it is truly an amazing putter.

No wonder why Scottie Scheffler has turned it up on the greens.

Putter Technology

The Spider Tour X introduces innovative features designed to enhance performance and feel on the greens. Inspired by Rory McIlroy, this model combines the precision of a blade with the advantages of a mallet design. With TSS weights strategically positioned farther forward, the Spider Tour X offers increased face rotation with 30° of toe hang, while maintaining a 5,000 MOI for unmatched stability.

The True Path™ Alignment system provides clear guidance on the putting line, improving aim and accuracy. Additionally, the TaylorMade Spider Tour X with alignment line on white background. White TPU Pure Roll™ insert offers a softer feel and optimal forward roll, the face grooves are angled at 45° for superior roll characteristics. Precision weighting and design elements ensure optimal CG placement for enhanced stability and forgiveness, catering to a variety of putting styles.

With the HYBRAR ECHO® Damper minimizing vibrations, golfers can enjoy a premium sound and feel with every putt, elevating the putting experience to new heights.

Detailed Review

Putter Design

The Spider Tour X’s aesthetic upgrades maintain the classic Spider shape while introducing subtle changes for an enhanced appearance. The clean gunmetal grey finish gives you a premium feel, and the slightly smaller, compact head shape compared to the Tour model is a nice touch. Although the larger head size compared to a blade putter, may not appeal to all, the incorporation of the white insert and alignment aid contributes to a more polished and modern look.

Sound & Feel

Positioned with its weighting at the back of the head, the Spider Tour X delivers a slightly firmer feel upon impact than anticipated, yet softer compared to milled-faced putters. The inclusion of the Hybrar Echo Dampener effectively minimizes vibrations, giving you a nice overall sound and feel. Despite its larger profile, the putter offers forgiveness across various putt lengths, ensuring a more centralized strike for improved performance.

Putter Control & Forgiveness

Engineered with a thin wall undercut and precisely distributed weight, the Spider Tour X has a lot of stability and forgiveness. The True Path Alignment system helps visualize the ideal putting path. Enhanced forgiveness is perfect for improving your longer putts, reducing dispersion and giving you confidence on the greens.

TaylorMade Spider Tour X Putter w/ white face insertWhen putts are struck from the toe or heel, they tend to start on a straighter path, and you can sense the head of the putter attempting to remain square throughout the stroke. However, if your stroke is significantly off target, you will still miss the putt, it is unfortunately not a magic wand.

The thick SuperStroke Grip will help with unwanted hand rotation.

Putting Performance

Throughout testing, the Spider Tour X showcased remarkable performance across different putts. It was stable and forgiving, the putter gave consistent results on the greens. I really enjoyed the shape, look and performance of the Spider Tour X putter.

Value for Money

Priced competitively at $349, the Spider Tour X is great value in today’s putter market. While its bold design may not resonate with all players, its performance, feel, and sound justify the investment for those seeking to improve their putting.
