The Underdog Story of Hanna Golf

How Jared Doerfler Started Making Milled Putters in Mason City, Iowa

There aren’t too many underdog stories in golf these days. John Daly’s win at Crooked Stick in the 1991 PGA Championship comes to mind as does Francis Ouimet at the 1913 U.S. Open and Ben Curtis at the 2003 Open. (I had to look that last one up.) After that it’s Danny Noonan and Roy “Tin Cup” McAvoy.

There aren’t many underdog stories in golf equipment either, except for maybe Adams Golf in the 1990s and again as they relaunched last year. That’s why it’s so fun to follow the rise of Hanna Golf. Jared Doerfler started with the aptly named Perfect Putt newsletter August 2023, covering the business side of golf. Then, he quit his job, emptied his bank account, and bought two CNC mills to start a putter company in Mason City, Iowa.

“Last summer, I quit my job.” as the story begins in his LinkedIn post announcing Hanna Golf

As you read the post and the 140+ comments, you can’t help but join the army of golfers rooting for him. Going all in and following your passion in small town America makes for a great story, but judging by the early response, this is just the beginning.

Made in America, actually, made in a garage in America, the custom putters are milled from 303 steel with three putter head options – El Reno, Amarillo, & Denver – in four lengths from 33-36 inches.
