Why 30 Putts?
According to the USGA, the average golfer hits 40 putts per round, about 2.2 putts per hole. For the 2022-23 season, the average putts per round for a PGA Tour pro was 29.09. (Both Colin Morikawa & Kurt Kitayama averaged exactly 29.09 for the year.) Now most of us don’t have the talent to drive like Rory or hit a wedge like Phil and after 10,000 hours of practice, we still won’t. But everyone can putt. And everyone can get better at putting with practice. Yet check out any golf course on a busy Saturday morning and nearly every range position is filled and there are maybe four or five players on the putting green.
The Quickest Way to Lower Your Handicap
While we all want to stripe it down the center of the fairway, the easiest and most effective way to post lower scores is to improve your short game. The goals will vary from golfer to golfer and 30 putts won’t be everyone’s number, but what’s measured is managed. So whether its no 3-putts or averaging two putts per hole, time spent in pursuit of a putting goal will have a significant impact on your game and your handicap.
With as many as 40 putts per round, just a 10% improvement nets four less strokes. The great thing with putting is, those four strokes are very attainable. You don’t need to be a professional athlete or have an insane practice regiment, you just need to devote more practice time to your putter and a little less to your driver.
